Can you take a safety razor on a plane?
This one catches people out at security, and it is an easy fix once you know the rule.
The razor
An empty safety razor is generally allowed through, because on its own it cannot cut anything. Take the blade out before you pack it.
The blades
Loose double-edge blades belong in the hold. They are thin, sharp and unwrapped, which is exactly what security screens for. Keep them in their paper sleeves inside your checked bag.
The simplest approach
Pack the razor in your carry-on and the blades in the hold. If you are travelling with hand luggage only, buy a pack when you land. They are a standard size everywhere, which is one of the quieter advantages of shaving this way.

Different countries screen differently, so check the airline before you fly if it matters to your trip.

Screening is decided by the airport, not the airline, and it varies. The safe assumption is that anything with an exposed edge belongs in the hold.

How to pack it
Take the blade out, rinse the head and let it dry before you pack. A razor that goes in damp comes out with water marks and, over enough trips, corrosion around the dial.
The three pieces travel well wrapped in a cloth or in the box the razor came in. There is no need for a dedicated case unless you are travelling constantly.
If you are travelling with hand luggage only
Buy blades when you land. Double-edge blades are a standard size and sold in pharmacies and supermarkets in most countries, which is one of the quieter advantages of shaving this way. A pack costs the equivalent of a coffee.
Getting the used ones home
Do not put loose blades back in hand luggage on the return leg. If you have no checked bag, leave them behind in a sharps bin or a hotel disposal slot. They are worth pennies and they are not worth a conversation at security.
A note on longer trips
If you are away for weeks, the blades matter more than the razor. Ten blades weigh almost nothing and cover two months, which is why the ten-pack is the size we sell.

Will security take my razor?
Not if there is no blade in it. An empty head has no edge and is treated like any other metal object. Put the blade in your checked bag before you leave home.
What if I forget and leave a blade in it?
You will most likely be asked to surrender the blade rather than the razor. It is worth checking the head before you pack, because the blade sits flush and is easy to miss.
Can I buy blades at the airport?
Rarely airside, often landside and almost always in town. Double-edge blades are a standard size worldwide, so any pharmacy will have something that fits.
What about a travel-size razor?
A shorter handle packs slightly better and shaves slightly worse, because you lose some of the weight that does the work. For most trips the full-size razor in three pieces is the better answer.
How do I stop it marking my bag?
Dry it, take it apart and wrap it in a cloth. The three pieces take less room apart than assembled and there is nothing to catch on fabric.
What about cruise ships and hotels?
The same rule as aircraft applies to most cruise lines: razor yes, loose blades in checked luggage. Hotels almost never stock double-edge blades, so bring your own.
A packing routine that takes one minute
The night before, take the blade out and drop it into whatever tin you keep used blades in. Rinse the head, dry it properly and take the razor apart into its three pieces. Wrap them in a cloth or put them back in the box they arrived in, and put that in your hand luggage. Put the fresh blades, still in their paper sleeves, in a corner of the checked bag.
Done in that order, there is nothing to think about at security and nothing loose in your bag. It is worth doing the same on the way home, because a used blade left in the head is the most common reason people lose a razor at an airport.
